What is guayusa?
Guayusa (Ilex guayusa), pronounced “gwhy-you-sah,” is a caffeinated leaf of the holly species that grows only in the upper Amazon basin of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Records suggest that guayusa has been used and traded as a medicinal plant since at least 500 C.E. Traditionally, tribal societies, such as the Amazonia Kichwa, brew guayusa leaves much like tea. However, guayusa is not related to Camellia Sinensis, used to make green or black tea varieties. Instead, guayusa is a cousin plant to yerba mate (Ilex Paraguariensis), a fellow rainforest holly leaf that grows further south in Argentina and Brazil.
How does AmaTea® compare to traditional energy products?
While AmaTea® organic guayusa is a caffeinated ingredient, the energy experience is uniquily different than traditional forms of caffeine. Instead, energy products using AmaTea® tend to provide a more balanced and cognitively uplifting energy experience. Products using our AmaTea® Max can take advantage of its proven clinically studied benefits.
What does AmaTea® taste like?
Guayusa is technically very different than other teas in that it lacks heavy tannin or bitter fraction that would typically cause the astringent, dry-chalky flavor profiles. Instead, guayusa provides a pleasant, almost sweet-like taste that can easily accompany a wide variety of other flavors.
